La solitudine del curatore #1 a cura di Katiuscia Pompili, è un progetto indipendente che coinvolge gli artisti Lia Cecchin, Giuseppina Giordano, Filippo Leonardi, Leonardo Remor, Davide Sgambaro, g. olmo stuppia presso KaOZ, spazio collaterale di Manifesta 12. La mostra in co-curatela con Dimora Oz e Sasvati Santamaria, inaugurerà il 20 Agosto alle ore 19.30 e sarà aperta al pubblico dal 21 Agosto al 2 Settembre 2018.
“La solitudine del curatore” è il titolo di un capitolo del libro Esposizioni: emergenze della critica d’arte contemporanea di Stefania Zuliani, docente dell’Università di Salerno – che fa il punto sulla figura del curatore dalla fortuna degli anni Novanta alla crisi del nuovo millennio.
Titolo evocativo che ha ispirato questo progetto itinerante, che farà la sua prima tappa a Palermo. Un’esposizione in progress che inizia con l’atto della selezione delle opere da riporre in un bagaglio a mano e si concretizza grazie a un complesso gioco di connessioni sul territorio.
In una società cosiddetta “liquida” sono ancora parecchie le etichette che resistono e molti sono ancora i pregiudizi da abbattere, ancor più dei muri che si costruiscono lungo quelle frontiere venute meno per le merci ma non per gli uomini. La Sicilia è geograficamente un’isola ma storicamente un incrocio, un luogo naturalmente aperto all’ospitalità e alla coabitazione, una terra però, che per la sua posizione nel cuore del mediterraneo, continua a essere teatro di dolorosi approdi e conflitti tra poteri economici.
Secondo Z. Bauman il curatore è un creatore di comunità, colui che fa accadere le cose, sebbene il momento dell’ideazione sia quello più individuale, è nella relazione con gli artisti, col contesto, con l’opera e col pubblico che si innesca il desiderio, il tentativo di co-autorialità.
Nel rapporto umano e intellettuale che il curatore instaura con l’artista viene meno quel senso di solitudine autoriale che rischia di imprigionare in una gabbia autoreferenziale l’opera d’arte. In viaggio con una valigia in cui è racchiuso un polifonico archivio di creazioni, il curatore oltrepassa frontiere geografiche e mentali arrivando a destinazione, immaginando ogni luogo come un’utopia, una “città invisibile” che grazie all’arte possa essere continuamente reinventata.
Il contenuto del bagaglio – le opere – e i lavori site-specific costruiscono una relazione aperta destinata a modificarsi ogni volta, in grado di attivare un processo collettivo di cui il display rappresenta il risultato di un dialogo costruito in più tempi e in diversi luoghi, in cui lo spazio assume un potere plastico e in cui il curatore diventa un detonatore di situazioni possibili.
Parte integrante del processo sarà la documentazione fotografica che darà modo agli autori delle opere in valigia di prendere visione del costante tentativo di Gesamtkunstwerk e di tracciare quella memoria archivistica che è ormai divenuta costante ossessione del pensiero contemporaneo.
Il progetto nasconde tracce autobiografiche della curatrice che parte dalla sua terra di origine – la Sicilia – porta con sé opere di artisti conosciuti durante gli ultimi anni trascorsi tra Torino e Milano ed è essa stessa simbolo di quel flusso di costante migrazione di donne e uomini sulle direttrici sud-nord del mondo.
“La solitudine del curatore” vuole essere un momento di riflessione necessario e indipendente sulle dinamiche dell’arte contemporanea, un confronto diretto tra curatori/teorici e artisti.
Dimora OZ è un laboratorio di arti visive, performative e multimediali, uno spazio transdisciplinare animato da numerosi artisti residenti a Palermo. Dimora OZ è un’art factory che affronta tematiche contemporanee, creando produzioni, eventi, workshop, con una particolare attenzione alle dinamiche relazionali di collaborazione e partecipazione.
KaOZ è un progetto collaterale di Dimora Oz che vede uno spazio fisico nel cuore del centro storico di Palermo.

La solitudine del curatore #1 curated by Katiuscia Pompili, is an independent project involving Lia Cecchin, Giuseppina Giordano, Filippo Leonardi, Leonardo Remor, Davide Sgambaro and g. olmo stuppia at KaOZ, a collateral project space part of Manifesta 12. The exhibition co – curated by Dimora Oz and Sasvati Santamaria, opening on 20th August at 7.30 pm, it will be open from the 21st of August to the the 2nd of September 2018.
“The solitude of the curator” is the title of a chapter in the book Expositions: Emergencies of the Criticism of Contemporary Art by Stefania Zuliani, Professor of the University of Salerno, which portrays the curatorial figure in the nineties, a decade of fortune in the context of it’s pre millennial crisis.
Zuliani’s evocative title is that which inspired this traveling project, which will make its debut in Palermo. It is an ‘exhibition in progress’ that begins with the act of selecting works to be stored in a carry-on bag and is realized as a result of a complex game of connections on the land.
In a so-called “liquid” society there still many labels who resist change and many remain the prejudices awaiting to be demolished, even more so than the walls built along the frontiers which have fallen short for the sake of commodities rather than for humanity.
Geographically speaking Sicily is an island, a place naturally open to hospitality and to cohabitation, but historically it is a crossroad, and still today it is a land which due to its position in the heart of the Mediterranean, continues to play the backdrop of an endless scene depicting painful landings and conflicts between economic powers.
According to Z. Bauman, the curator is a creator of community, it is the one who makes things happen, albeit the moment of conception is the most individual, is in the relationship with the artists, with the context, with the work and with the audience that triggers desire and attempt co-authorship. The curator establishes a unique relationship that with the artist that is both intellectual and soulful, leaving little space for a sense of authorial solitude which would compromise and put the work at risk for it would imprison the art in a self-referential cage. Traveling with a suitcase containing a polyphonic archive of creations, the curator goes beyond geographical and mental frontiers, arriving at the destination, imagining each place as a utopia, an “invisible city” which, owing to art can be continually reinvented. The contents of the baggage, the works including those which are site-specific, collectively build an open relationship which is destined to change every time, able to activate a collective process in which the display is the result of a dialogue built at various times and in different places, where space takes on a plastic power and in which the curator becomes a detonator of possible situations. An integral part of the process will be the photographic documentation that will allow the authors of the works in the suitcase to take a look at Gesamtkunstwerk’s constant attempt to trace the archival memory that has become a constant obsession which defines contemporary thought. The project hides autobiographical traces of the curator who starts the journey from their homeland Sicily, and brings with it works of artists whom have emerged and established as artists during recent years spent between Turin and Milan, which is in itself a symbol of the flow of constant migration of women and men on the South-north directions of the world.
“The solitude of the curator” calls for a moment of necessary and independent reflection on the dynamics of contemporary art, a direct confrontation between curators / theorists and artists.
Dimora OZ is a visual, performative and multimedia art laboratory, a trans-disciplinary space animated by numerous artists living in Palermo. Dimora OZ is an art factory that deals with contemporary issues, creating productions, events, workshops, and with particular focus on the relational dynamics of collaboration and participation.
KaOZ is a side project of Dimora Oz that sees a physical space in the heart of the historic center of Palermo.
